,
I have been a Hamstead Hall parent since 2002, with all of my children attending the school. Having lived only a few roads away for the past 16 years and worked as a teacher in Handsworth for 17 years, I know our community well and understand the diverse needs of the young people it serves. Professionally, I am a Lead DSL with extensive safeguarding experience across a multi‑academy company of 12 primary and secondary schools. This role has strengthened my understanding of pupil wellbeing, SEND needs, behaviour support, attendance challenges, and the importance of strong relationships between school and families. I am committed to ensuring that every child — including those with additional needs or facing barriers — is supported to achieve their full potential. I am also the Managing Director of **Birmingham Says No CIC**, an anti‑knife‑crime and anti‑youth‑violence organisation. Since 2019, we have delivered educational workshops, diversionary activities, and essential street first aid and bleed‑control training across the city. Through this work, I have supported families experiencing poverty, advocated for pupils at risk of exclusion, and gained deep insight into the pressures young people face both inside and outside school. Alongside this, I have significant experience within the justice system, which has given me a clear understanding of the consequences young people can face and the importance of early intervention, fairness, and strong pastoral support. This perspective reinforces my belief that schools must be places of safety, aspiration, and opportunity for every child. I would like to serve as a parent governor to use my educational experience, community knowledge, and commitment to inclusion to support Hamstead Hall in continuing to provide a safe, ambitious, and supportive environment where all pupils — whatever their background or needs — can thrive.

Surinder Ark-SandalParent Governor 26/02/2026- 26/02/2030
Surinder Ark-Sandal
I am deeply committed to supporting the school community in providing an inclusive, equitable, nurturing, and high-quality education where every child can thrive. As a parent of a pupil at the school, I bring both a personal stake in its success and extensive professional experience that I believe would add value to the governing body. I am a creative, enthusiastic, and dynamic professional with a deep desire to achieve success for the collective good. I am an expert in youth and community engagement, cohesion, development, and participation with over 30 years' experience working across the public, private and voluntary sectors. I hold a first degree in English Literature and Media & Communication Studies, a BPhil in Youth and Community Studies, and a Diploma in Counselling. My professional background spans youth and community work, education, equality, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I), counselling, and strategic leadership, including managing an international charity. For over 27 years I have worked as a youth and community work practitioner in various roles across the city including managing youth provision, staff teams, projects, major city-wide events and a youth and community centre. I have extensive experience in both operational delivery and strategic development, with a proven track record of designing and delivering work that captures people's imagination, mobilises participation and creates meaningful, lasting change. I have delivered and supported work with schools around wellbeing, youth violence and youth participation. I have also collaborated with schools in developing and delivering informal and social education programmes. Safeguarding, ethical practice and the wellbeing of children and young people are central to my professional values. The latter part of my career was working within Birmingham City Council's Equalities & Cohesion Team, where I supported the embedding of the Everyone's Battle Everyone's Business equality strategy. This involved working collaboratively with internal teams, staff networks, schools, faith organisations and community groups to tackle systemic inequality, strengthen cohesion and improve equity. This experience has given me a strong understanding of governance, accountability, policy implementation, and the importance of data-informed decision-making. Alongside this, I have worked as a visiting lecturer at Birmingham City University, the University of Birmingham (Westhill College) and Birmingham Newman University, delivering on the youth and community studies degree and counselling skills to youth and community work practitioners. I have also served on management and executive committees, including a local charity and Unite the Union, giving me experience of governance, scrutiny, decision-making and collective leadership. I am a qualified and experienced Counsellor with a body of work including schools, Relate Birmingham, and private work. My work philosophy is that growth is a lifelong journey to strive to self-actualise. I am passionate about supporting young people and adults to recognise the miracle of their own resources, resilience, and resolve with the potential
